Ethiopia Plants 700 Million Trees in One Day

Ethiopia Plants 700 Million Trees in One Day

The Ethiopia tree planting campaign marked a bold step toward climate recovery as citizens planted 700 million trees in just one day. This mass initiative forms part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy program, which targets 50 billion trees by 2026.

As daylight broke, Ethiopians across cities and villages got to work. Government officials reported that 14.9 million people had already planted 355 million seedlings by 6 a.m. The numbers remain unofficial, yet the scale of involvement was visible everywhere.

Prime Minister Abiy led the effort in Jimma, a major city in Oromia. He urged citizens through social media to help meet the planting goal. At the same time, ministers joined local communities across different regions to show support on the ground.

In Addis Ababa, scenes of intergenerational teamwork stood out. At one site, Almaz Tadu, 72, planted trees with her grandchildren. She called the campaign both meaningful and uplifting. Nathenael Behailu, a 13-year-old student, placed his third sapling in the soil, expressing his dream for a greener nation. Nearby, Ayanaw Asrat had already reached his 15th tree by mid-morning.

The Ethiopia tree planting campaign builds on earlier reforestation drives. Officials say citizens planted 40 billion trees since the initiative started in 2019. The government aims to add 7.5 billion more by the end of 2025. To encourage participation, authorities shut down public offices and sent civil servants to local planting zones.

This campaign does more than combat deforestation. It also promotes national unity at a time when Ethiopia faces internal conflicts. Government leaders view this as a chance to heal the land and reconnect communities after the Tigray war and unrest in Amhara.

Despite the enthusiasm, some experts voiced concerns. A forestry scholar from Jimma University questioned the planting target’s feasibility. He argued that hitting 700 million trees in one day would require 35 million people, each planting 20 seedlings. He also raised issues about exotic species, improper site selection, and lack of survival data from previous years.

“Reforestation works best when we track what survives,” the expert said. “Scientific planning must go hand-in-hand with public involvement.” According to him, planting trees is just the beginning—long-term success depends on nurturing what’s in the ground.

Global observers are watching closely. Ethiopia’s model of mass civic reforestation could influence other nations seeking climate solutions. If the seedlings thrive, this campaign may inspire a new path forward for environmental recovery.

For now, the image of grandparents and children planting side by side offers hope. These acts reflect a national desire to restore landscapes and protect future generations. The Ethiopia tree planting campaign represents more than a numbers goal—it is a growing legacy of shared responsibility and green ambition.
