Hamis Kiggundu’s dream to rejuvenate this historic stadium culminated in a state-of-the-art facility, heralded by President Museveni during the commissioning ceremony on April 25, 2024. The 49-year lease granted to Kiggundu underscores his pivotal role in this monumental development.

The grand opening on June 1, 2024, was a spectacle of grandeur and joy. A mesmerizing 10-minute fireworks display at 7:00 PM set the celebratory tone, followed by a diverse array of sports and entertainment events. The stadium, nearly filled to its 35,000 capacity, buzzed with excitement as all 40 executive boxes sold out, showcasing the public’s immense support.

The night was packed with thrilling activities, starting with URA FC’s 3-0 victory over Kitara FC. Following another brilliant fireworks display, top Ugandan artists like Rema, Eddy Kenzo, and Bebe Cool energized the crowd with electrifying performances. SC Villa edged out Express FC with a 1-0 win, and boxing enthusiasts cheered as Zahara Nandawula and Isaac Zebra Jr claimed their respective victories.
