Hundreds of Minnesota businesses shut their doors on Friday to protest Minnesota Businesses Protest ICE. Organizers called for residents to skip work, refrain from shopping, and join rallies in St. Paul and Minneapolis. These cities have seen increased immigration enforcement activity.
The Trump administration insists that the immigration operation is about public safety. It aims to deport people it deems criminals. Critics argue, however, that it also impacts migrants with no criminal record, as well as US citizens.
Thousands of federal officers were deployed to Minnesota for “Operation Metro Surge.” Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated that 10,000 “criminal illegal aliens” have been arrested in Minnesota since Trump’s return to office.
Impact of ICE in Minnesota Communities
The death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman, sparked protests across Minnesota. Local officials condemned the killing, and activists organized protests against ICE’s actions. In response, community leaders like Bishop Dwayne Royster are demanding that ICE leave Minnesota and all states. His group, Faith in Action, supports the protest.
Business owner Corey Lamb closed his store, Harriet Grove Botanicals, to join the protest. He expressed frustration with ICE’s impact on his community. “When our workers are afraid, it affects our business,” Lamb said.
Kim Bartmann, who owns six restaurants in Minneapolis, said the strike was a difficult decision. While she supports the cause, she admitted that closing her businesses for the day would financially hurt. “Economically, it is a severe blow,” she said.
Economic Consequences of the Strike
Bartmann’s restaurants, including Barbette and Gigi’s Café, have seen a 30% drop in sales over the past few weeks due to ICE’s increased presence. Some employees, despite being US citizens, are afraid to leave their homes. As a result, Bartmann has had to reduce hours and staff.
Local businesses, including restaurants, tattoo parlors, and toy shops, are part of the strike. Many of these businesses rely on immigrant workers. They are all concerned about the economic effects of ICE’s actions.
Calls for Action and Legal Oversight
Protesters are calling for oversight of ICE’s activities. They want Congress to step in and hold ICE accountable for what they see as overreach. The protest is also calling for stronger protection for immigrant communities.
Vice President JD Vance recently called for local Minnesota law enforcement to cooperate with federal officials on immigration enforcement. However, Minnesota’s sanctuary policies limit cooperation with ICE. These policies are meant to protect undocumented immigrants.
Effect on Schools and Families
The impact of ICE’s actions also extends to schools. In Columbia Heights, four students, ages 5 to 17, were detained by ICE this week. This has created anxiety among families and educators, adding to the protests.
Local officials continue to express concern about the effects of ICE raids on Minnesota’s residents, especially children and families.
