Q: Can you share a bit about your background and what initially inspired you to start a YouTube channel?
Absolutely! My journey began in Kenya, where I was born 32 years ago. My love for adventure and exploration led me to become a YouTube travel Vlogger. It all started with the desire to share my art and travel experiences with the world.
You see, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore over 74 countries, each offering its unique adventure. But it wasn’t just about visiting these incredible places; it was about capturing their essence and sharing it with others with my GoPro camera.
The inspiration to start a YouTube channel came from my passion for travel and a desire to find the perfect platform to showcase my adventures. I wanted to not only document my journeys but also connect with fellow travel enthusiasts, inspiring them to to travel and appreciate the diverse cultures our world has to offer. I also wanted to make travelling my career. So, that’s how my YouTube journey began – as a way to blend my love for travel, art, and storytelling into one exciting adventure to share with the world!
Q: How has your journey as a YouTuber evolved since you first started? Are there specific moments or milestones that stand out to you?
My YouTube journey has been an incredible rollercoaster, filled with unexpected twists and turns. When I first started, I had no idea that YouTube would become such a big part of my life. It’s been a beautiful evolution, watching myself grow from a small YouTuber with 100 subscribers to now being recognized on an international scale for my video creations with almost half a million loyal subscribers.
One of the most satisfying aspects has been the ability to turn my passion for travel into a means of livelihood that is profitable. Traveling across the globe and creating videos has been an absolute dream come true. The joy of immersing myself in different cultures, trying new food, and experiencing the world’s wonders has been beyond words. And to think, all of this is possible because I have a camera, a passport and a passion for travel.
I’ve had the privilege of assisting people from diverse corners of the world in setting up their own YouTube channels. It’s been incredibly rewarding to share my knowledge and experiences, helping others take their first steps into the world of content creation. Being able to contribute to someone else’s journey is a feeling that words can’t quite explain.
As for milestones, there have been many. From hitting significant subscriber counts to collaborating with fellow YouTube creators, each moment has been a milestone in its own right. But what truly stands out are the connections I’ve made along the way, both with my audience and with other YouTubers. The ability to inspire and be inspired by this community is an aspect of this journey that keeps me motivated every single day. Q: What motivates you to consistently create and share content on your channel? How do you stay inspired and keep your passion alive?
The driving force behind my consistent content creation revolves around the impact it has on my fans worldwide. The ability to influence and positively change someone’s life through my videos is a motivation that fuels me.
Every time I receive a positive messages on Instagram or comment on YouTube from viewers expressing how my travels and experiences have inspired them to chase their dreams, or embrace diverse cultures, it lights up my passion even more. Knowing that my content can make a difference and encourage others to take a step towards their goals is incredibly gratifying.
Also, realizing my YouTube success extends beyond myself has been a driving force. My YouTube achievements have a direct impact on the success stories in my village, where I’ve had the honour of teaching and motivating aspiring YouTubers. Having opened over 20 channels for those with limited job prospects, it’s inspiring to witness their transformation from novices to thriving YouTubers with big audiences, now proud homeowners in our village. This collective success showcases the power of YouTube to empower individuals and uplift entire communities, when shared and nurtured, can pave the way for a brighter future for all.
Moreover, the incredible relationship I have with my audience is a significant motivator. Their enthusiasm, feedback, and engagement push me to keep evolving and delivering content that resonates with them. The constant interaction and connection with my audience create a beautiful feedback loop, inspiring me to continue sharing and exploring.
It’s this combination of making a meaningful impact on individuals, supporting my community, and cherishing the relationship with my audience that keeps my passion alive. The journey as a YouTuber is not just about creating content; it’s about being part of a larger, interconnected world where we can inspire and uplift each other, one video at a time.
Q: Being one of the prominent YouTubers in Kenya and Africa, how does it feel to have such a significant impact on your audience and the YouTube community?
Being a prominent YouTuber in Kenya and across Africa is incredibe! YouTube has provided me with a powerful voice and a platform to showcase the richness and beauty of my Kenyan culture to a global audience. It’s a chance to correct misconceptions and stereotypes that often surround African cultures, offering a more authentic view of my country.
Through my videos, I can bridge gaps of understanding, showcasing the diversity, traditions, and values that define Kenya and its people. It’s a rewarding experience to know that my video content can challenge preconceived notions and show the world a more accurate and respectful appreciation of our heritage. Beyond just being a video content creator, I see myself as a cultural ambassador, breaking down barriers and building connections between communities worldwide.
Q: Can you share any memorable or impactful interactions you’ve had with your audience that left a lasting impression on you?
Certainly! The interactions I’ve had with my audience have been nothing short of the best. One of the most memorable experiences was witnessing the collective power of my online community coming together to make a meaningful impact. Through our combined efforts and donations online we’ve been able to build homes for members of my village that were in need. This sense of unity and generosity truly left an indelible mark on me and those we’ve helped along the way.
These interactions have allowed us to create employment opportunities within our community, making a real difference in the lives of individuals who were seeking sources of income. The ability to contribute to the economic growth and prosperity of my community has been incredibly rewarding.
Additionally, we’ve been able to gather funds through initiatives like GoFundMe, directly channeling these resources to create a positive impact on the lives of those we’ve featured on my stories. From sending underprivileged children to school, providing educational opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have had, to supporting various causes that touched our hearts, these actions have been a testament to the kindness and compassion that exists within my YouTube community.
Q: YouTube often involves sharing personal experiences and stories. Is there a particular video or series that was emotionally significant for you to create and share with your audience?
YouTube has been a powerful platform for me to not only share my travels but also to share my personal experiences and stories. I always share my personal journeys, everyone now knows my family (all of which now have YouTube channels) and my friends who hold a special place in my heart. Opening up about my roots, showcasing my village, and narrating my life’s journey allowed me to connect with my audience on a more personal level.
In particular, discussing how I lost eyesight in one of my eyes was a emotional experience. It was a moment of vulnerability, sharing a part of my life that shaped who I am today. The support and understanding from my audience during that time were incredible and reminded me of the empathetic and compassionate community we’ve built together.
These videos, where I bared my soul and shared my life’s ups and downs, reinforced the idea that authenticity and honesty resonate deeply with people. They not only allowed me to connect with my audience but also highlighted the importance of openness and understanding in building a strong and supportive YouTube community.
Q: How do you balance your personal life and time spent on creating content for your channel? Any tips on maintaining a healthy work-life balance?
Balancing my personal life and dedicating time to create content on my YouTube channel centres around a simple yet effective approach: making myself the star of my own YouTube show. By embracing this concept, I get rid of the pressure of constantly seeking new content because, I am the content.
This perspective allows me to integrate my daily life experiences, family, construction, meals travels, and personal day-to-day activity into my channel, making the creative process more organic and manageable. I’ve learned to include my passions and adventures into my content, allowing it to be an authentic reflection of who I am. It’s about finding a balance between sharing my life with my audience and recording those moments with my loved ones.
My advice for maintaining a healthy work-life balance in the YouTube world of content creation is to stay true to yourself. Let your passions guide your content, and don’t shy away from letting your unique experiences shine through including the ups and downs. By doing so, you’ll find that creating content becomes an extension of your life, rather than a separate entity, leading to a fulfilling and balanced approach in both personal and professional spheres.
Q: If you could go back and give advice to your younger self when you were starting your YouTube channel, what would it be?
If I could turn back time and advise my younger self as I started this YouTube journey, I would emphasize the importance of remaining real and the importance of being consistent with filming content. I would tell myself, “YouTube is really real and it has the power to reshape your life. Take it seriously from the very beginning.”
During the initial stages, I approached it with a 50-50 mindset, not fully comprehending the immense impact it could have on my life. Today, looking back, I realize that YouTube is everything to me. The lessons learned, the experiences gained, and the community built have all been invaluable. So, my advice would be to grasp the opportunity early on, invest your all of your efforts, and recognize the transformative power that lies within it.
Q: Finally, what advice or tips do you have for aspiring YouTubers looking to start their own channels and make an impact in the YouTube community?
My strongest advice for new (or old) YouTubers starting out is to shift your focus away from the numbers – views, subscribers, or profits. Instead, channel your energy into creating content that moves you. Create content that, if you stumbled upon as a viewer, you’d be eager to share with your closest friends because it is motivational, entertaining, funny, or inspiring. Prioritize building your art beyond the metrics of views, money, or a rush to achieve over night success.
