Accounting Interns have the opportunity to learn and gain first-hand experience in a real accounting department or an accounting firm. They help perform research, prepare financial reports, and assist with reconciling accounts and other duties, as needed.

They assist experienced professional accountants with accounting tasks, including bookkeeping, accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial statements, and taxes.

As an accounting intern, you are expected to gain experience in accounting while on the job.

Many accountants hire interns during school to give them experience that could lead to a full-time job.

Accounting Intern Duties:

  • Prepare and process payroll
  • Create vendor invoices, purchase orders
  • Maintain general ledger accounts, bank accounts, quarterly financial reports
  • Maintain and oversee sales tax compliance
  • Maintain vendor records and files
  • Maintain accounts payable and receivable
  • Manage all payroll duties, such as timesheet entry, check printing, direct deposit, etc.
  • Sort and distribute mail
  • Handle all employee inquiries and issues
  • Collect, update, and organize files
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Accounting Intern Responsibilities:

  • Process expense reports
  • Research and resolve billing discrepancies
  • Maintain Current Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Trial Balances
  • Perform reconciliations
  • Work closely with other departments, including Finance, Human Resources, and Operations
  • Analyze cash flow and budgetary planning
