Bridging Political Divides: How Anita Annet Among’s Emotional Intelligence has United Uganda’s Government

In a time of political turbulence and division, Speaker Anita Annet Among has reshaped Uganda’s governance with her exceptional emotional intelligence and commitment to unity. Known for her resilience, she is bridging gaps between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Uganda’s history of legislative conflicts and mistrust has often hindered progress, but Anita’s leadership is mending these rifts. In contrast to previous leadership philosophies that escalated conflicts, her approach emphasises dialogue and mutual respect. Anita’s efforts are not only reshaping Uganda’s political landscape but also setting a new standard for leadership and governance.

Anita’s rise to prominence began during her campaign for Deputy Speaker in 2021, a period marred by relentless and calculated attacks from various bloggers. These orchestrated efforts aimed to blackmail her, either for extortion or to incite hatred against her, benefiting her political opponents. However, Anita, with remarkable fortitude, saw through the political gamesmanship and disavowed the hate, understanding it as mere politics.

Upon securing her position as Deputy Speaker alongside her senior, Jacob Oulanyah, Anita faced another significant challenge. The general election aftermath brought to light a stark legal loophole pertaining to social media. Recognising the influential role of social media in shaping public opinion, she called for enhanced regulations to curb its misuse. In a fortuitous turn, the Honourable Muhammad Nsereko introduced a private member’s bill addressing this issue. Under Anita’s leadership, Parliament passed the bill, and it became law with the President’s assent.

Anita’s response to these challenges demonstrated her exceptional emotional intelligence. She remained resolute and accommodating despite being the target of numerous social media attacks. Instead of retaliating, she reached out to some of her detractors, striving to create peace and demystify the lies spread against her. This approach reflected her desire to live an exemplary life, showcasing a rare blend of strength and grace.

One of Anita’s most notable achievements, which has earned her admiration from President Museveni, is her ability to neutralise tension between the three arms of government. She has skillfully bridged the gap between the executive, parliament, and judiciary, fostering an environment of cooperation rather than conflict. This is in stark contrast to the time period of Speaker Rebecca Kadaga’s confrontations. In January 2017, Kadaga labelled a court order by Deputy Chief Justice Steven Kavuma as “stupid.” The order had barred Parliament from investigating the Shs 6bn bonus payments to government officials, and Kadaga’s fierce condemnation highlighted the deep-seated tension between Parliament and the judiciary.

Assuming office as Speaker amidst these tensions, Anita took it upon herself to restore harmony. Her approach was rooted in fostering dialogue and mutual respect, believing that for Uganda to progress, its governance structures needed to work in tandem. President Museveni’s praise during the commissioning of her Bukedea Hospital and College of health Sciences in March 2024 encapsulated her success: “She has enabled all other government institutions to work together.”, president Museveni Clarified.

Anita Among’s efforts have dissolved the stalemate between the three arms of government, creating a cohesive and functional governance environment. Her leadership has demonstrated that, even in the face of adversity and division, it is possible to build bridges and foster unity for the greater good. Her story is a compelling reminder of the impact that one dedicated leader can have on an entire nation’s governance, paving the way for a brighter, more unified future for Uganda.
