Pope Prays for DR Congo and Flood-Stricken Southern Africa

Pope prays for DR Congo

On 18 January 2026, Pope Leo, during his Angelus prayer, expressed deep concern for the humanitarian crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and southern Africa, both suffering from extreme challenges. From violence in the DR Congo to devastating floods in southern Africa, the Pope urged peace, solidarity, and prayers for those affected.

Humanitarian Crisis in DR Congo
Pope Leo highlighted the dire situation in the eastern DR Congo, where ongoing violence has forced many families to flee their homes. The Pope called for dialogue and reconciliation between warring factions to restore peace and safety to the region. He also noted that the suffering in DR Congo is exacerbated by extreme weather, which has claimed lives and further strained humanitarian efforts. A tragic landslide triggered by heavy rainfall on Monday night claimed at least 18 lives in the region.

Extreme Conditions for Displaced People
Those fleeing the violence are living in extreme conditions, with refugee camps lacking sufficient access to food, clean water, and medical care. Cholera outbreaks have begun to spread, further complicating an already fragile situation for the displaced populations. Pope Leo’s prayers focused on the hope that aid will reach these vulnerable communities, and the situation will improve through global solidarity and support.

Solidarity with Southern Africa
The Pope also expressed his deep sympathy for the people of southern Africa, where torrential rains and flooding have led to the loss of over 100 lives. Countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe are among those hardest hit. Pope Leo prayed for the deceased, the displaced, and those involved in rescue efforts, assuring the region of the Church’s continued solidarity and support.

In his address, Pope Leo reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to standing by those affected by violence and natural disasters. As DR Congo and southern Africa navigate their respective crises, the Pope called on all people of faith to unite in prayer and action, supporting efforts to bring peace, relief, and hope to these suffering communities.
