Hamis Kiggundu, a well-known businessman, has taken a bold step towards redeveloping Kampala’s vital infrastructure. He launched a massive cleanup operation along the downstream section of the Nakivubo drainage channel, marking a key milestone in the long-awaited project. This initial cleanup paves the way for construction to begin in the coming weeks, transforming the drainage system and surrounding area.
To kick off the operation, heavy machinery and trucks have been deployed to remove waste, debris, and sediment buildup in several segments of the channel. This area has struggled with flooding, pollution, and poor sanitation, contributing to significant challenges for residents. The cleanup signals the beginning of a transformative project aimed at addressing these issues and improving urban infrastructure.

Hamis Kiggundu, also responsible for the redevelopment of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, plans to overhaul the entire drainage system. This project will integrate commercial infrastructure, improving flood control, sanitation, and contributing to urban renewal in downtown Kampala.
“This isn’t just about cleaning. It’s about laying the foundation for lasting development,” Ham said during the site visit. “We’re committed to working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure this project benefits both the people and the city.”

The construction phase will follow, with plans to cover and modernize the channel. Additionally, the project will create service lanes, install water filtration chambers, and potentially develop commercial spaces above the infrastructure. These changes aim to restore the channel’s functionality while improving the area’s aesthetic appeal.
Recent photos and videos from the cleanup efforts show workers conducting dredging operations, gathering waste, and preparing the channel for the next phase of this important project. The long-term goal is to modernize Kampala’s drainage systems, providing both flood protection and a more vibrant urban landscape for residents.
