Kabila’s Party Banned in DR Congo Over Alleged M23 Rebel Ties as High Treason Charges Loom
In a stunning political move, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially banned the political party of former President Joseph Kabila, accusing it of supporting M23 rebels who have taken control of parts of eastern DRC.
The People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD) has been suspended due to what the government calls its “ambiguous attitude” toward the Rwandan-backed rebel occupation of Congolese territory. The ban comes as the government also charges Kabila with high treason and orders the seizure of all his assets.
The interior ministry’s statement raised further alarm by noting that Kabila returned to Goma, a city currently controlled by the M23, and is reportedly receiving protection from the rebel group. Though Kabila has denied any links to M23, his silence amid these latest developments has only intensified speculation.
Kabila, who led the nation from 2001 to 2019 after succeeding his assassinated father Laurent Kabila, left the DRC in 2023 to pursue academic studies in South Africa. He recently earned a doctorate in geopolitics and announced his return to help resolve the country’s deepening security crisis. But critics say his ties to political figures linked to M23 make his intentions questionable.
A spokesperson for the M23 neither confirmed nor denied Kabila’s presence in Goma, stating bluntly, “I don’t see any problem him being here.”
Kabila’s official spokesperson, Barbara Nzimbi, promised a national address in the coming days, fueling anticipation as the country watches whether a full-blown political crisis may erupt.
The DRC is currently grappling with an increasingly volatile situation, with the eastern region plagued by M23 insurgency and growing distrust between the government and Kabila’s allies. As the allegations deepen, this marks one of the most dramatic political confrontations since Kabila handed over power in 2019.
