The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has moved to address growing confusion over the leadership of its Youth League, following the circulation of misleading information during the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa.
On Friday, November 14, a publication distributed at the event listed political activist Kasmuel McOure as the President of the ODM Youth League, sparking questions across social media and among party members. The document also listed McOure in other leadership roles, raising further concerns about the authenticity of the newsletter.
In a statement issued on Saturday morning, ODM dismissed the claims as false and misleading, reaffirming that Johnmark Brown Ketorah remains the legitimate Youth League President.
“The President of the ODM Youth League is Honourable Johnmark Ketorah. Ignore any publication circulating containing misleading information on the same,” the party’s statement read.
Why the Mix-Up Happened
The newsletter circulated during the Mombasa anniversary event appeared to contain several inaccuracies regarding youth leadership. Although McOure is known to be an active and vocal supporter of ODM, he has not been appointed to any major leadership position within the party.
McOure rose to prominence within ODM circles in 2024, when former Prime Minister Raila Odinga appointed him to the party’s youth and student league team. His role has primarily involved youth mobilisation, political messaging, and strengthening ODM’s grassroots networks. However, he has never held an executive office in the party’s official structure.
Johnmark Ketorah’s Longstanding Role
Johnmark Ketorah has served as the ODM Youth League President since 2016, after being nominated for the role by fellow youth leaders and later formally approved by the National Executive Council (NEC).
Over the years, he has played a central role in organising youth activities, expanding ODM’s presence among young voters, and shaping the party’s strategic direction ahead of elections.
His leadership was also visible during the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa, where he represented the youth wing in official functions.
ODM’s Broader Leadership Changes
The clarification comes just two days after ODM confirmed sweeping changes within its top leadership. The party’s National Governing Council approved Siaya Senator Oburu Onginga as the new party leader.
Additionally, the council endorsed:
- Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir
- Kisii Governor Simba Arati
- Vihiga Senator Geoffrey Osoti
as deputy party leaders, marking a significant restructuring within ODM’s senior ranks.
A Reaffirmation of Official Party Structure
By issuing the statement, ODM hopes to quell growing speculation and restore clarity on its organisational structure. Party officials emphasised that any updates to leadership positions must come from official channels and not from unofficial publications.
With preparations already underway for the 2027 elections, ODM has underscored the importance of consistency, transparency, and unity within its ranks—particularly among the youth, who remain a decisive force in Kenya’s political landscape.
