How to reactivate your M-PESA Account

M-Pesa (M for mobile, pesa is Swahili for money) is a mobile phone-based money transfer service, payments and micro-financing service, launched in 2007 by Vodafone and Safaricom, the largest mobile network operator in Kenya. How to reactivate your M-PESA Account. It has since expanded to Tanzania, Mozambique, DRC, Lesotho, Ghana, Egypt, Afghanistan, and South Africa. Meanwhile, services in India, Romania, and Albania have been terminated amid low market uptake. M-Pesa allows users to deposit, withdraw, transfer money, pay for goods and services (Lipa na M-Pesa), access credit and savings, all with a mobile device.

The service allows users to deposit money into an account stored on their cell phones, to send balances using PIN-secured SMS text messages to other users, including sellers of goods and services, and to redeem deposits for regular money. Users are charged a small fee for sending and withdrawing money using the service.

M-Pesa is a branchless banking service; M-Pesa customers can deposit and withdraw money from a network of agents that includes airtime resellers and retail outlets acting as banking agents.

What you need

The ID Number used to register your Mpesa

The date of birth of the person that registered the line

Current Mpesa PIN.

The procedure to reactivate your M-PESA Account

  • To reactivate your M-PESA
  • Go to M-PESA menu
  • There will be two options in Swahili and English
  • Wezesha or activate
  • Choose Activate
  • Input your Mpesa PIN as the start key
  • Input your ID number or Date of Birth in the order DDMMYYYY

Your Mpesa is now active and ready to transact

Tips on Using M-PESA

Checking your M-PESA balance

  1. Select “Show balance” on the Safaricom App or select Check Balance on M-PESA menu in your Safaricom sim tool kit.
  2. Enter your secret PIN
  3. Wait for SMS confirmation message with your balance

Depositing cash to your account

  1. Go to an authorized M-PESA agent with your phone and original ID
  2. Inform the agent how much you wish to deposit
  3. They will use their agent phone to send you e-money in exchange for cash
  4. You and your agent will receive an SMS from M-PESA confirming the transaction

You could also top up your M-PESA account from your bank account.

Sending money

  1. Go to the ‘Safaricom’ menu and select ‘M-PESA’
  2. Select ‘Send Money’.
  3. Enter your recipient’s phone number, the amount you wish to send and your PIN
  4. You and the recipient will receive an SMS confirming the transaction

To stop a wrong transaction, press any number or letter and press send within 25 seconds.

If you send money to the wrong number send the confirmation message to 456 for reversal.

Withdraw from M-PESA

If you are a Registered M-PESA Customer

  1. Confirm the M-PESA agent has sufficient funds for your transaction
  2. Give your phone number and show your original ID
  3. Go to your M-PESA menu, select ‘Withdraw cash’
  4. Enter the Agent number, the amount you wish to withdraw and your PIN
  5. Confirm the details are correct and press OK.
  6. You and your agent will receive an SMS confirming the transaction
  7. Receive and confirm the cash and proceed to sign the logbook

If You Are a Non-Registered Customer

  1. Confirm the agent has sufficient funds for your transaction.
  2. Present the SMS containing the M-PESA voucher number (notification confirming receipt of cash).
  3. Give your phone number and show original ID
  4. You and your agent will receive an SMS confirming the transaction
  5. Receive and confirm the cash and proceed to sign the logbook

M-PESA statements on E-Mail

Receive your monthly M-PESA statements easily and conveniently by the 5th of every month.

  1. Dial *234# from your mobile phone to access the menu
  2. Select ‘My M-PESA Information’, then ‘M-PESA Statement’
  3. Select ‘Full Statement’
  4. Register with your National ID or document of registration number
  5. Enter and confirm your email
