List of South Africans by net worth in 2023. As of September 2023, Elon Musk $219 billion is the richest followed by Johann Rupert and his family with a net worth of 11.8 billion U.S. dollars. The Rupert family are ranked at 144 globally and have also claimed the title of being the richest people in Africa, which was previously held by Nigerian billionaire, Aliko Dangote, for 12 years. Rupert’s net worth grew by 4.2 billion U.S. dollars from 2022, mainly because of the sudden share price increase of his luxury goods company Richemont. Nicky Oppenheimer and his family placed as the second richest in South Africa, with a net worth of 8.3 billion U.S. dollars and ranking at 257 worldwide. Their net worth source was mostly founded via the diamond market. They were followed by Koos Bekker, the chairman of media group Naspers, with 2.4 billion U.S. dollars who placed 1,281 globally. Patrice Motsepe, the first black African on the Forbes list and founder of African Rainbow Minerals, experienced a further decline of around 300 million U.S. dollars, leaving him with a net worth of 2.4 billion U.S. dollars and being ranked 1,304 out of the global billionaires list.
