Tragedy in the Ring: Nigerian Boxer Dies After Collapsing During Fight in Ghana
The African boxing community is mourning the tragic loss of Nigerian light heavyweight fighter Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed and later died during a professional bout in Accra, Ghana, on Saturday.
Olanrewaju, a former national and West African champion, was facing Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu in a Ghana Professional Boxing League match at the Bukom Boxing Arena when the fatal incident occurred. He lost consciousness in the third round.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) confirmed that he received first aid on-site before being rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead just 30 minutes after arrival.
Remi Aboderin, General Secretary of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, described the 28-year-old boxer as a “fearless ring warrior.”
“We are deeply devastated. This is a painful moment for Nigerian boxing. Gabriel was a committed athlete, and we will stand by his family through this dark time,” Aboderin told BBC Sport Africa.
A Career Cut Short
Olanrewaju entered the ring with an official record of 23 professional fights, securing 13 victories and suffering eight losses. His sudden death has left the boxing fraternity in shock, reigniting concerns over health and safety protocols in African boxing circuits.
While investigations are expected, there is no official statement yet regarding the medical oversight or pre-bout clearance for the match.
A Reminder of Boxing’s Harsh Realities
Olanrewaju’s passing underscores the physical risks fighters face and the urgent need for improved safety measures and medical preparedness at combat sports events.
As tributes pour in from across Nigeria and beyond, the boxing world pauses to remember a warrior who gave everything in the ring
