Diogo Jota and Brother Killed in Tragic Lamborghini Crash in Spain

Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota has died in a devastating car crash in Zamora, Spain, alongside his brother André Silva. The Spanish Guardia Civil confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 00:30 BST in the early hours of Wednesday.

The fatal crash involved a Lamborghini, which reportedly blew a tyre while overtaking another vehicle. The car veered off the road in the municipality of Cernadilla, caught fire, and killed both occupants on impact.

Jota, 28, had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso less than two weeks earlier, on 22 June 2025. The couple, who share three children, had celebrated their union publicly with heartfelt photos and messages posted online.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the football world. Pedro Proenca, President of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), described Jota as “an extraordinary person” with “infectious joy” and nearly 50 international appearances for Portugal. He added that both Diogo and André represent “irreplaceable losses” to Portuguese football and the broader community.

In a formal statement, the FPF extended condolences to the families and football clubs affected, including Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, where the brothers played. The federation has also requested a minute of silence before Portugal’s women’s European Championship match against Spain on Thursday.

Witnessing such a tragic loss so soon after Jota’s joyful wedding has only deepened the collective grief. Photos shared just last week showed Jota and Rute smiling together, captioned with the words “Yes, forever.”

As the investigation continues, tributes continue to pour in for a player remembered not only for his talent on the pitch but also for his warmth and character off it. The Diogo Jota car crash leaves behind a legacy cut heartbreakingly short.
