Okwara was born on March 16, 1983, in Nairobi, Kenya. She is an alumnus of Kianda High School. She holds an BSc in Microbiology from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She is a graduate of the Bloomberg/ Africa Leadership Initiative Media fellowship.
Okwara’s first job in media was at KBC she was doing a children’s show. She was hired by radio station, Hot 96FM. She later joined the Nation group through QFM, QTV. She was hired by Kenya Television Network (KTN). She is the last born of three children to Ms. Esther Ambale Sande. Details about her father are not yet in the public domain. In 2018, Yvonne unfortunately lost her brother Albert Okwara, aged 50. Albert had been living with a disability as deaf-blinded before he succumbed to the German measles, that came during his mother’s pregnancy. In 2019, this made Yvonne to take it to social media in a long post which he titled as ‘My Journey with Albert Okwara’
“I graduated in 2006, and in the same year, I joined Hot96 as a Presenter when the radio station was newly launched by Royal Media Services (RMS). My first show was World Music on Saturday mornings, after which I started co-hosting the mid-morning radio show before finally hosting the breakfast show,” she says.
“I worked on Rashid Abdalla’s talk show Maskani: a four-hour talk show that discussed political and socio-economic issues. It was citizen-targeted and citizen-driven. While producing this show, I began to shadow the host of NTV’s This Morning for about eight months before I was given the green light to co-hosting the TV show,” she says.
Yvonne is an alumnus of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). She pursued her Bachelor’s Degree in BSc Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry.
