Malawi National Elections: Campaigns Heat Up Amid Fuel Shortages and Inflation

As Malawi national elections approach, voters in Lilongwe face serious frustrations. Fuel shortages, inflation, and power blackouts are leaving many feeling desperate. Malawians are eager for change, but their path to the polls is not without challenges.

Fuel Shortages Add to Growing Discontent

In Lilongwe, fuel shortages have become a regular issue. Long queues are typical at petrol stations, but even then, many are unable to fill their tanks. Stephanie Chiya, a local resident, expressed her frustration: “I wanted a full tank, but they gave me only 15 litres. I don’t know how I’ll manage.”

As a result, many are frustrated with the government’s failure to address basic needs. Felix Kachulu also shared his concerns, saying, “No fuel, no food. That’s why I want change.” As citizens continue to struggle with everyday issues, the election is seen as an opportunity for renewal.

Power Blackouts and Inflation Exacerbate the Crisis

Alongside fuel shortages, Malawi is facing power blackouts and inflation. These issues are affecting everyone, especially the poor. Unemployment remains high, and basic goods are becoming more expensive. Voters are increasingly frustrated, hoping for a leader who can deliver tangible improvements.

Malawians are not just voting for a president; they are voting for a chance to escape the economic hardships they face every day.

The Presidential Race: Chakwera vs. Mutharika

This year’s election sees two familiar faces competing for the presidency: Lazarus Chakwera, the current president, and Peter Mutharika, his predecessor. The 2025 national elections are significant because they are the first since the 2019 vote was annulled and rerun.

Mutharika’s campaign promises a return to better times, a message that resonates with many voters who feel disillusioned with Chakwera’s leadership. Chakwera, however, must defend his record and prove that he can lead the country out of its current crisis.

The Stakes for Malawi’s Future

The outcome of the Malawi national elections will determine the country’s future. With economic instability, the stakes are higher than ever. Voters are hoping for real change, and the upcoming election could lead to a new chapter for Malawi.
