Guinea social media restrictions

Guinea has imposed social media restrictions on platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook as the country awaits the final results from the presidential election. The move comes as Gen Mamady Doumbouya, the junta leader who took power through a coup in 2021, claims a significant lead in the race, sparking concerns over the suppression of public discourse and opposition voices.

Social Media Restrictions Raise Concerns Over Election Transparency

The Guinea social media restrictions were reported by internet monitoring organization NetBlocks, which noted disruptions in access through major providers, including Orange and MTN. This follows a significant shift in the political landscape, with Doumbouya, who had initially promised not to run, breaking his word and seeking election after implementing a new constitution. Critics view the restriction of social media access as an attempt to stifle criticism and limit the spread of alternative viewpoints, particularly as Doumbouya gains a commanding lead in the polls.

Election Results and Opposition Criticism

Initial results from Sunday’s election indicate that Gen Mamady Doumbouya has taken more than 80% of the vote in several districts of the capital, Conakry, and has a strong lead in other regions across the country. The opposition, however, has condemned the election as fraudulent, citing irregularities and accusing the junta of excluding key political parties from the election. Civil society groups campaigning for the return of civilian rule have called the election a “charade.”

Doumbouya’s Broken Promise and the Future of Guinea

The Guinea social media restrictions come as Doumbouya, who initially promised to hand power back to civilians, reneged on that pledge by running for president. His actions have sparked widespread debate over his legitimacy and the future direction of the country. While he remains popular with Guinea’s youth, his governance has been marked by heavy restrictions on opposition activities, banning protests, and curtailing press freedom.

The Guinea social media restrictions highlight ongoing tensions in the country’s political climate as Gen Mamady Doumbouya seeks to solidify his power. With the election results under scrutiny and global attention on Guinea’s political trajectory, the coming days will be critical in determining the future of the country’s democracy and its relations with international partners.
