Abir Moussi Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

Abir Moussi, a candidate for Tunisia's presidential elections, shows her ink-stained index after castsing her ballot at a polling station in the capital Tunis on September 15, 2019. Rarely has the outcome of an election been so uncertain in Tunisia, the cradle and partial success story of the Arab Spring, as some seven million voters head to the polls today to choose from a crowded field. A Tunisian court has sentenced Abir Moussi, a prominent opposition leader, to 12 years in prison. This sentence comes as part of President Kais Saied’s intensified crackdown on critics. Moussi, leader of the Free Constitutional Party, was arrested outside the presidential palace in 2023. Authorities charged her with assault, claiming she attempted to incite chaos.

Abir Moussi’s Legal Battles and the Latest Sentencing

Moussi has strongly rejected the charges. She insists that she was simply exercising her right to criticize the government. Despite the legal challenges, Moussi vowed to continue her resistance against what she calls “abuse, torture, and political and moral violence.” This marks her third trial. In August 2024, she received a two-year prison sentence under Decree 54, which targets “false news.” The court later reduced her sentence on appeal.

Appeals and Political Motivations Behind the Sentence

Moussi is now appealing a second sentence under the same law. Her lawyer has labeled the ruling “unjust” and argued that it is politically motivated. Moussi’s supporters argue that these ongoing trials are part of Saied’s larger strategy to silence political opposition.

The Political Repression in Tunisia and Saied’s Control

Moussi’s case reflects a broader trend of political repression in Tunisia. Last month, an appeals court handed down sentences of up to 45 years for opposition leaders, business figures, and lawyers accused of conspiring to overthrow the government. Critics believe that Saied’s actions since he dissolved the elected parliament in 2021 have undermined the judiciary’s independence. Despite accusations of dictatorship, Saied insists that he is simply removing “traitors” from the system.

Abir Moussi’s Continued Resistance and Call for Freedom

Moussi remains determined to resist the political crackdown. Her case has attracted attention from both local and international human rights organizations. These groups are calling for her release and an end to the political repression in Tunisia. Moussi’s fight for freedom continues, and her supporters hope for change in the country’s political landscape.
