Algeria stadium tragedy

A night meant to celebrate football glory turned tragic in Algiers when three fans died and dozens were injured following a barrier collapse at the 5 July Stadium, moments after MC Alger secured the Algerian league title.

The incident occurred just after the final whistle, as fans surged forward in celebration, causing a barrier on the upper stands to give way. Many spectators fell onto the lower tier, leading to chaos in the packed stadium. According to the Algerian health ministry, more than 70 people were treated across three hospitals, with most already discharged.

Celebrations Turned Catastrophic

MC Alger had just drawn 0-0 with NC Magra, enough to retain their league crown for a second consecutive year. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the haze of green flares and cheers. But the jubilation quickly turned into panic and mourning.

Local media reports indicate the injuries were a result of overcrowding and structural failure during the post-match celebrations. The league trophy presentation was immediately postponed in light of the incident.

National Mourning and Support

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished a swift recovery for those injured. In a heartfelt gesture, MC Alger players and staff visited local hospitals to donate blood and show solidarity with the victims.

The tragedy underscores persistent concerns around stadium safety and crowd control in African football venues. While fans across the continent had gathered to celebrate, Algeria is now left grieving what should have been a proud sporting moment.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfUOzzUHWqA
