Step 1: Download Your Data

Before deleting your account, download your personal data for archival purposes. Meta allows you to retrieve information such as photos, messages, and account activity.

For Facebook:

  1. Log into your Facebook account on a web browser.
  2. Navigate to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  3. Click Your Information > Download Your Information.
  4. Follow the prompts to choose the data you want to download:
    • Select the file format (HTML or JSON).
    • Choose a date range.
    • Set media quality (high, medium, or low).
  5. Click Submit Request. Facebook will notify you when the file is ready to download.

For Instagram:

  1. Go to Settings on the Instagram app or website.
  2. Navigate to Your Activity > Download Your Information.
  3. Choose the account you want to download data from.
  4. Select either Download to Device or Transfer to Destination.
  5. Specify file format, media quality, and date range.
  6. Click Create File. Instagram will notify you when the data is ready.

Step 2: Delete Your Facebook Account

Deleting your Facebook account is permanent and cannot be undone after the grace period.

  1. Log into Facebook on a browser.
  2. Navigate to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  3. Go to Accounts Center > Account Ownership and Control.
  4. Click Deactivation or Deletion.
  5. Select your account and choose Delete Account.
  6. Follow the prompts to confirm deletion.

Note: Facebook delays account deletion for a few days. Logging in during this period will cancel the deletion request.

Step 3: Delete Your Instagram Account

Deleting your Instagram account removes all your data permanently.

  1. Go to the Accounts Center via the Instagram app or website.
  2. Click Account Ownership and Control > Deactivation or Deletion.
  3. Select the account you want to delete.
  4. Choose Delete Account and follow the instructions.

Important: If you delete your Instagram account associated with Threads, your Threads profile will also be deleted.

Step 4: Delete Your Threads Profile

Threads deletion is tied to your Instagram account. To delete only Threads:

  1. Visit Threads.net on a web browser.
  2. Click the menu (two parallel lines) and select Settings.
  3. Go to Account > Deactivate or Delete Profile.
  4. Choose Delete Profile and follow the prompts.

Note: Threads profile deletion requests take 30 days to process. To reuse the same Instagram account for Threads, you’ll need to wait 90 days after deletion.

FAQs:

Can I Reactivate My Accounts?

  • Facebook: You have a grace period of a few days to cancel deletion by logging back in.
  • Instagram: Once deleted, you may re-register with the same username if it hasn’t been taken.
  • Threads: Reactivation requires creating a new Threads profile.

What Happens to My Data After Deletion?

Meta retains some data for legal or compliance reasons but will remove the majority of your personal content.

By following these steps, you can leave Meta’s platforms while retaining a copy of your data for future reference. Whether you’re motivated by privacy concerns, dissatisfaction with moderation policies, or simply seeking a digital detox, you now have the tools to take action.
