The White House confirmed Thursday that Trump’s vein condition is a common, age-related issue known as chronic venous insufficiency. The announcement came after widespread speculation triggered by images of former President Donald Trump with visibly swollen ankles and a bruised right hand.
Trump Vein Condition Clarified Amid Public Concern
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt addressed the press, reading a letter from Trump’s physician, U.S. Navy Officer Sean Barbabella. The letter explained that Trump recently underwent medical tests, including an ultrasound of his lower legs. The results showed chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that affects blood circulation in the legs, especially in individuals over 70.
Leavitt assured reporters that the condition is benign and manageable. She added that Trump was not experiencing pain or discomfort as a result of the swelling.
Additionally, Barbabella stated that Trump showed no signs of deep vein thrombosis, arterial disease, heart failure, kidney impairment, or systemic illness. “President Trump remains in excellent health,” the physician wrote.
Trump’s Bruised Hand Also Addressed
Alongside the swelling, media and internet users noted bruising on Trump’s right hand. Barbabella attributed this to “minor soft tissue irritation” caused by frequent handshaking, combined with Trump’s daily use of aspirin for cardiovascular health.
Leavitt said the president’s activities, including public appearances and travel, had not been affected by either condition. The official position from the White House was intended to dispel unfounded speculation circulating online.
Doctors Say the Condition Is Common and Treatable
Medical experts have weighed in on Trump’s vein condition, describing it as manageable and unrelated to major health risks.
Dr. Kwame Amankwah, chief of vascular surgery at the University of Connecticut, explained that chronic venous insufficiency involves the failure of veins in the legs to efficiently return blood to the heart. He said the condition is usually treated with compression stockings and leg elevation.
“If left unmanaged, it can cause more severe swelling and possibly ulcers, but it’s generally not life-threatening,” Amankwah noted.
Dr. Todd Berland, director of outpatient vascular interventions at NYU Langone Health, echoed this view. He described the condition as more of a quality-of-life concern than a life expectancy issue.
Trump’s Overall Health Remains Strong
The White House also referred to Trump’s most recent physical examination, conducted on April 11 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. That report showed a normal heart rhythm and no major health concerns.
With confirmation that his conditions are minor and treatable, officials emphasized that Trump remains fit and active ahead of the 2026 political season.
