For years, sci-fi shows have depicted futuristic computers with shapeshifting screens that can fold or expand. Now, Samsung is making that idea a reality in smartphones.
A New Concept in Foldable Technology
The new Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold folds in two places like a brochure. This design lets it fit an iPad-sized screen into your pocket. Samsung showcased the device at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, ahead of its upcoming U.S. release. The phone is already available in limited quantities in South Korea.
The concept is exciting, but there are compromises. While the phone is slim as a tablet, it feels bulky as a phone. Also, the price will likely be high. Although Samsung hasn’t announced pricing, its Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $2,000. Early adopters may hesitate, and the average consumer might find it hard to justify the expense.
Samsung’s goal with the Galaxy Z TriFold is to provide a bigger screen when you need it and a smaller one when you want to carry it. The phone features a 10-inch screen that folds in two places. This is different from the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s 8-inch screen, which folds in half.
The Z TriFold targets users who need a device for work and productivity. The foldable screen lets you run apps in split-screen mode, like a desktop. You can resize apps and move them around as needed. Pairing the phone with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse could make it a viable mini-laptop.
Google’s Gemini assistant is built in, helping users manage apps on the screen. It could make multitasking easier with fewer taps and swipes.

More Flash Than Function for Now
The phone feels thin when opened, but it’s bulky when folded. Still, Samsung has improved on early foldable models, which had issues like poor cameras and visible creases. The TriFold’s cameras match those of Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra. The creases are noticeable but not distracting.
That said, Samsung hasn’t shown a compelling reason for consumers to carry around larger foldable screens. The Galaxy Z TriFold offers more screen space and better multitasking, but the Galaxy Z Fold 7 already provides these features. The TriFold doesn’t offer much that’s unique compared to a regular smartphone.
A Giant Screen in Your Pocket
Foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold still have a small market share. These phones are more expensive than regular smartphones, and most U.S. shoppers only upgrade when their current phone breaks. Foldables are gaining popularity, though. Almost every major Android phone maker offers one, and Apple is expected to release its first later this year.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold is another experiment in phone design. The company is trying different forms to see which one users prefer. As Drew Blackard, Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Samsung Electronics America, said, “You’ll only see an evolution from here of what we can do.”
