Ross Stores, Inc., operating under the brand name Ross Dress for Less, is an American chain of discount department stores headquartered in Dublin, California. It is the largest off-price retailer in the U.S.; as of 2018, Ross operates 1,483 stores in 37 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Guam, covering much of the country, but with no presence in New York, northern New Jersey, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and areas of the Midwest.

History

 Ross Stores, Inc., operating under the brand name Ross Dress for Less, is an American off-price retail chain headquartered in Dublin, California, United States.

   In 1950, Morris “Morrie” Ross opened the first Ross Department Store in San Bruno, California.

In 1958, Ross sold his store to William Isackson to become a residential and commercial real estate developer.

   Isackson built the company to six stores, located in San Bruno, Pacifica, Novato, Vacaville, Redwood City, and Castro Valley.

   In 1982, the six Ross Department Stores have acquired a group of investors, including Mervin Morris, founder of Mervyn’s chain of department stores. They changed the format to off-price retail units, and within three years rapidly expanded the chain to more than 100 stores under Stuart G. Moldaw and Don Rowlett.


   The company engages in the operation of off-price retail apparel and home accessories stores. Its products include branded apparel, accessories, footwear, and home fashions through the Dress for Less and dd’s DISCOUNTS brands.

   With over 92 000 employees and more than 1 400 stores in 37 U.S. states, Ross Stores, Inc. is considered one of the largest off-price retail chains in the U.S. According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.
