Sheena Ruparelia was born on 23 December 1988 in Uganda to billionaire businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia and Jyotsna Ruparelia. Growing up in one of Uganda’s most prominent entrepreneurial families, Sheena was exposed early to the principles of hard work and enterprise.
She pursued her education both in Uganda and abroad, graduating with a BSc in Economics and Accountancy from City, University of London. Her international exposure and academic background laid the foundation for her entry into the business world.
Career Beginnings
Sheena began her professional journey at Crane Bank, one of the group’s former flagship companies. Starting as a cashier, she later rose to the position of Business Development Manager, gaining first-hand experience in finance and client engagement.
When Crane Bank closed in 2016, Sheena transitioned into the family’s real estate and hospitality ventures, formally joining Meera Investments as a director in 2017. Her focus shifted to managing and growing sectors that now define her leadership within the Ruparelia Group.
Leadership at Ruparelia Group
As a Director of the Ruparelia Group, Sheena oversees the group’s hospitality and real estate divisions. Her portfolio includes leading roles in projects under the Speke Group of Hotels and Meera Investments, both central pillars of the family empire.
Sheena’s achievements include:
- Speke Resort Convention Centre: She spearheaded the completion of this state-of-the-art facility, which successfully hosted the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China summits in January 2025. The project elevated Uganda’s global reputation as a hub for international conferences.
- Bukoto Living and Tagore Living: Modern residential projects developed with her brother, Rajiv Ruparelia, offering high-end condominiums and apartments in Kampala.
- Speke Hotels portfolio: Ongoing expansion and modernization of Uganda’s leading hotel chain, strengthening the group’s dominance in the hospitality sector.
Her leadership style is often described as reserved but highly effective, with an emphasis on execution, precision, and results.
Recognition and Awards
On 26 January 2025, Sheena received a National Diamond Jubilee Medal from President Yoweri Museveni, recognizing her role in delivering the Speke Resort Convention Centre in time for Uganda’s major summits. The president also symbolically gifted her cows, underscoring the cultural and national value of her contribution.
Her recognition reflects not only her growing influence but also her position as a capable successor within Uganda’s most prominent family business.
Philanthropy
Beyond business, Sheena is a trustee of the Ruparelia Foundation, the group’s charitable arm. Through the foundation, she has been actively involved in:
- Supporting orphanages and child welfare programs.
- Promoting health awareness and organizing medical outreach, including free eye camps and cataract surgeries in Kamuli in 2022.
- Delivering clean water projects and education initiatives in rural Uganda.
Her philanthropic work demonstrates her commitment to community welfare and balanced leadership.
Public Engagements
Sheena has participated in public discussions on women in business and development, advocating for equal opportunities and confidence-building among young women. In 2020, she appeared in a talk show hosted by Victoria University Kampala, encouraging women to pursue education and leadership roles.
In 2018, she was instrumental in reviving the Royal Ascot Goat Races, one of Kampala’s most iconic social charity events.
Personal Life
In 2016, Sheena married Jay Sakaria in London, with ceremonies held at The Savoy and a reception at The Dorchester. The couple has two daughters, born in 2019 and 2022. Despite her high-profile background, Sheena is known for maintaining a low public profile, focusing instead on business and philanthropy.
Succession Questions in the Ruparelia Group
Speculation about succession in the Ruparelia Group has often placed Sheena in the spotlight. While her brother Rajiv Ruparelia remains the group’s Managing Director, Sheena’s rising influence in real estate and hospitality has fueled discussion about whether she could one day take on a larger leadership role.
For now, Sheena continues as a director with a clear focus on her sectors, while Rajiv oversees the group’s broader operations. Industry observers, however, recognize the siblings as a formidable team, blending Rajiv’s strategic oversight with Sheena’s meticulous project execution.
Legacy and Outlook
At just under 40 years old, Sheena Ruparelia has carved out a significant role in Uganda’s largest privately owned business empire. Balancing her duties as a director, philanthropist, and mother, she embodies the evolving face of family-led enterprises in Africa.
Her trajectory suggests that the future of the Ruparelia Group lies not in replacing leaders, but in cultivating complementary strengths across the family. Whether through global-scale events like the NAM Summit or luxury residential developments in Kampala, Sheena continues to expand both her personal legacy and that of the Ruparelia empire.
