#6 | Dr. Amos Nzeyi | $1Bn
Random fact: From a poultry venture named after a chicken to leading one of East Africa’s most successful beverage companies.
Overview
Uganda’s sixth richest person, Dr. Amos Nzeyi, is a seasoned industrialist, entrepreneur, and sportsman whose business empire spans beverage manufacturing, baking, agribusiness, real estate, and sports infrastructure. As Chairman of Crown Beverages Limited — the exclusive bottler of PepsiCo products in Uganda — and founder of Hot Loaf Bakery, his companies have been household names for decades.
The majority of Dr. Nzeyi’s fortune stems from his controlling stake in Crown Beverages Limited, held directly and through offshore subsidiaries in Mauritius, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. His portfolio also includes substantial real estate holdings in Kampala and Wakiso, extensive agricultural land in Mpigi District, and hospitality assets.
Dr. Nzeyi’s flagship asset, Crown Beverages Limited, produces millions of cartons of soda annually and commands a dominant share of Uganda’s soft drinks market. In addition, Hot Loaf Bakery, founded in 1986, remains one of the country’s most recognized bread brands.
Offshore, Dr. Nzeyi holds investments in commercial properties in Nairobi, Kenya, and stakes in logistics ventures from his years in the transport industry. His properties are valued using capitalization rates from Kampala-based valuation experts, while beverage assets are valued using discounted cash flow models confirmed by independent analysts.
His personal residence at Kigo, a multi-acre estate with a private golf course, is valued at over $25 million. He also owns Palm Valley Golf Course Country Club, one of Uganda’s premier golf destinations, attracting international players and dignitaries.
Nzeyi’s cash holdings are estimated from dividend records, corporate filings, and insider transactions, while non-operational assets like the defunct National Bank of Commerce Uganda are excluded from the valuation.

Biography
Birthdate: 25 December 1947
Place of Birth: Kabale Hospital, Kabale District, Uganda
Born to Nathanel Sebugunzu, whose connection to British missionaries influenced the naming of the Kigezi region, Amos Nzeyi grew up in rural southwestern Uganda. His early schooling spanned multiple primary schools, often funded through domestic work for relatives. Even as a boy, Nzeyi showed entrepreneurial instincts, starting with a poultry venture selling eggs from a hen named “Nyinabujegere,” later moving into selling baked goods to classmates.
Expelled from Lower Kigezi High School over unpaid fees, Nzeyi relocated to Kampala, where he began informal work and later joined Water Resources Development as a mechanic’s assistant — his first and only formal job. He left after three years to launch his own timber and transport business, eventually supplying materials to major government and private projects.
In the 1970s, Nzeyi became a celebrated rally driver, winning Idi Amin’s 6,000 km OAU Rally in 1976. Political unrest forced him into exile in Kenya, where he co-founded Intercontinental Transport Company Ltd, operating over 250 trucks across East Africa.
Following the NRM’s 1986 victory, Nzeyi returned to Uganda and founded Hot Loaf Bakery. He later acquired the PepsiCo bottling franchise and co-founded Crown Beverages Limited, which he grew into a market leader. His business philosophy emphasizes empowering people over mere capital, and he is a prominent advocate for value addition in agriculture.
A devout Christian, Nzeyi is also an avid golfer, having played alongside global greats such as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. He continues to serve as a mentor to young entrepreneurs and a major contributor to Uganda’s tax base.
