What We Know About Raila Odinga’s Death
Raila Odinga, known affectionately as “Baba” in Kenya, was a key figure in the country’s political landscape, famous for his advocacy for electoral reforms and multiracial democracy. He had a long and storied political career, including serving as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.
His most significant political achievement was his leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the party through which he became a central figure in the push for democratic reforms in Kenya. Despite his strong political legacy, Odinga was unsuccessful in his five presidential bids, which spanned from 1997 to 2022.
Odinga had traveled to India for treatment alongside his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, who had also been undergoing Ayurvedic treatment at Sreedhareeyam Hospital in the same region. Rosemary had previously regained partial eyesight with the help of the facility.
Global Reactions and Plans for Repatriation
Indian authorities have already alerted the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), initiating the repatriation procedures for Odinga’s body, as required by protocol. His family, including his daughter Rosemary, is handling the formalities as his legacy continues to resonate both in Kenya and internationally.
Raila Odinga’s passing marks the end of an era for Kenyan politics. His leadership, resilience, and push for reform earned him widespread respect, both as a former opposition leader and a symbol of the struggle for a better, more democratic Kenya.
