In a landmark move for cultural preservation, Ethiopia has officially received 12 historic artifacts that had been held in Germany for over a century. The collection, which includes crowns, shields, and paintings, was originally gathered in the 1920s by Franz Weiss, Germany’s envoy to Ethiopia at the time, and his wife, Hedwig. On Wednesday, the precious items were handed over to the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University, marking the end of their 100-year stay in Germany.
Ethiopia’s Historic Artifacts Returned After 100 Years
The Ethiopia historic artifacts include items of significant cultural and historical value. German ambassador to Ethiopia, Ferdinand von Weyhe, emphasized that the return of these artifacts is a symbol of the longstanding relationship between the two countries. He expressed pride in the shared effort to preserve Ethiopia’s cultural heritage.
Professor Ramon Wyss, whose father had been born during the diplomatic posting, returned the artifacts during a formal ceremony attended by Ethiopia’s Tourism Minister, Selamawit Kassa. Wyss remarked that the family’s intention was to return the artifacts so that the public could appreciate their beauty while preserving the cultural history tied to his father’s birth.
A Milestone in Cultural Repatriation Efforts
Minister Kassa lauded the return of the items, describing it as a milestone in safeguarding Ethiopia’s cultural legacy. She noted that these artifacts would soon be made available for research and academic study. This return is part of Ethiopia’s broader efforts to recover looted cultural treasures from around the world.
In recent years, countries across Africa, including Ethiopia, have increased their calls for the return of stolen artifacts. Germany’s efforts to return these objects, including the famous Benin Bronzes to Nigeria, signal a growing acknowledgment of colonial-era injustices and a move toward restitution. As the artifacts are now back in Ethiopia, efforts to reclaim others continue, highlighting the importance of cultural heritage preservation.
